The Samoa Rugby Union (SRU) has appointed Viliamu Punivalu as the new Manu Samoa 7s Head Coach.
The appointment was confirmed at a special Board meeting of SRU this evening 19th July 2013.
At the meeting, SRU Chairman Tuilaepa Fatialofa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi congratulated Punivalu and wished him well in his new role.
Punivalu was chosen from 18 applicants 7 of whom were shortlisted for interviews. Shortlisted included former Manu Samoa greats such as Muliagatele Brian Lima and Semo Sititi
Punivalu has been coaching the Vaiala Club for the past years and is currently Head Coach of the Samoa Under 20s that competed in the recent Junior World Cup in France, and improved its ranking to 9th from 10th at last year’s Junior World Cup.
Punivalu takes over from Taus? Fa’amaoni Lalomilo who was terminated ahead of the recent Sevens World Cup in Russia.
Coach to have say in appointment of Asst. Coach/Manager
The new Manu Samoa 7s coach has a say as to who the team’s next assistant coach/manager will be.
That’s why the coach was picked first, so he can sit in on the selection of his assistant, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Samoa Rugby Union, Tavu’i Mike Lemisio, said today.
New coach Viliamu Punivalu said this morning he won’t see who was on the shortlist for the combined job until this evening.
But rugby officials talked of this “new process†as a measure to ensure the coach and his assistant/manager can work together.
Punivalu himself was one of seven shortlisted from 18 applicants for coach.
But included in that 18 were applicants for assistant coach/manager as well which opens up the possibility that the new assistant might be chosen from those who missed out on being picked coach.
Vacancies for Manu 7s coach and assistant coach/manager were advertised at the same time.
