Concerns that they were exposed in set piece play and at the breakdown in their last outing has the Bulls going back over their game plan as they prepare for Saturday’s (SA time) Super Rugby semi-final against the Brumbies. Bulls coach Frans Ludeke told Rugby365 that he was well aware of the lessons dished out by the Stormers who beat the Bulls 30-13 in their last outing. “I don’t think our set pieces, scrum or lineouts, were good enough to play in a pressure game like that,” he said. The Bulls had also conceded penalties at the breakdown and would need to be smarter there. Ludeke was also concerned that when they got out of their own half they couldn’t release the Stormers’ pressure. On the few occasions they did, they scored points. “We’ve said it a number of times, but there is a lot to take from that game, we can only benefit,” he said. The set piece execution would be vital. “If you want to apply pressure, you need to make sure you get the ball when you are in good positions, to build that pressure. “It is an area we will focus on,” he said. However, the knockout aspect of the competition changed the mindset as well. “It is a once-off and we will be ready for it,” he said. The Bulls also know that at Loftus Versfeld they are a formidable opponent and the Brumbies have only one win there in Super Rugby, in 2006 while the Bulls have never lost a playoffs game at home. The Bulls have also had some welcome news on the injury front. Jan Serfontein, Francois Hougaard and Flip van der Merwe have all benefited from a week’s break and will be available for selection.
