With the latest âBenji Marshall to unionâ saga, many have suggested that perhaps the recently dumped James OâConnor should come and take the vacant âbig bucks rugby league starâ position that Benji has left.
This begs many questions, a few of which are âwhat would league gain?â and âwhat would union lose?â
When pondering these questions, I came to the conclusion that perhaps this was quite possible a nice, peaceful transition for both codes involved.
Why, you ask? Read on.
The first question I will address is âwhat will league gain?â
Obviously, with someone like OâConnor, there is plenty to be had.
Not only is James a fantastic footy player, potentially another dual international, but he would also leap close to the top of the âmost marketableâ list as well.
Not only is he an exciting, attractive player, but he is also an enigma, coming from another sport, and of course, the women love him.
And the way the NRL would see this is simple = $$$.
Increased TV viewership and badly needed increased ticket sales, the NRL would be in seventh heaven. Itâs clear anyone who is a league fan would be a winner here. And thatâs fantastic.
Now this all looks great for league, but does that mean itâs bad news for union?
Not at all. While OâConnor is a fanatic footy player, and his departure would be a shame, there are plenty of positives to look at also.
The Melbourne Rebels obviously had plenty of reason and backing to let him go after just two seasons with the club, and while they lose a good player, they also lose a âbad influenceâ that the club was obviously sick of putting up with.
This also allows them to blood new cubs such as former league player Bryce Hegarty. And as much of a stretch it seems, it may even be the case that OâConnorâs talent is wasted in union.
His talent type of crafty footwork and blinding speed (that saw him smash Billy Slater in a foot race) is perhaps more suited to the extra 10 metres given in league.
Not only this, but he can never seem to possibly fit into the Wallabiesâ rugby set-up. Moving to league can give him a chance to establish himself in a new national team set-up (and challenge him to make it there in the first place).
Ultimately, a change of codes could work for both parties involved.
While it would be sad to see OâConnor leave union, it may likely be not a bad option for all parties involved.
League gets a potential superstar and cash cow, union gets rid of one more problem child as well as the obligation to include OâConnor in the Wallabies team, and James himself gets a fresh start with some new resolve.
Does union need James OâConnor? I say no.
