I"d love to paint portrait of rugby star hubby, says model/artist Aoife

DUBLIN model- turned-artist Aoife Cogan plans to paint a portrait of her rugby star husband.

Aoife, who won Miss Ireland in 2005, is married to Leinster and Ireland centre Gordon D’Arcy.

Aoife (30) is one of Ireland’s most established models, but she is fast making a name in the world of art and is regularly commissioned for her work.

The self-confessed hippy specialises in portraits using the technique of chopsticks, which she picked up while a student at the NCAD.

Aoife has had her paintings snapped up by several of Gordon’s Irish rugby team mates, but she has yet to get Gordon to agree to his own masterpiece.

“I’d love to do a painting of him,” Aoife told the Herald.

“Not posed or anything,” she laughed.

“But I can see some cool rugby shots of him that I definitely think would look amazing as a portrait.”

While she has long talked about her dreams of having her own art exhibition, the main problem is holding on to her pieces long enough to put a collection together. “I have been talking about an exhibition for so long and it’s in the pipeline,” the slender model said.

“All my pieces are selling so it’s hard then to get separate pieces together to view. It is really good and I shouldn’t say it as a complaint, but a lot of people say ‘can I see your work?’ and I literally have nothing to show them because everything has sold,” she added.

Confidence

Aoife works from her Dublin home that she shares with her sporting hubby and says that there is no need to set up a studio of her own.

“A lot of my work has come through from when people see paintings in someone else’s house,” she said.

“I love that because you know that people are commissioning you because they have already seen your work, which gives you confidence.”

A lot of Aoife’s work is done using chopsticks and a mix of layers of dots and shadows.

And she was channelling the oriental spirit yesterday when she donned a kimono to help launch Yo! Sushi’s new menu, which includes a calorie count for each of the 87 dishes.

Aoife and Gordon (32) wed in a hippy-style bash in Co Monaghan last July with guests including Brian O’Driscoll and his actress wife Amy Huberman.

And the couple have just returned from a three-week break in Bali where they celebrated their first wedding anniversary.
