Profits soar at rugby star Sexton’s company

Accumulated profits at the promotions firm owned by one of Ireland’s top rugby stars, Johnny Sexton, raced ahead last year to €225,188, new figures show.

Confirmation of the surge in profits at the Dubliner’s JAS Management and Promotions Ltd follows a summer to remember for the Ireland No 10.

The 28-year-old got married earlier this month to childhood sweetheart Laura Priestley. And earlier in the summer, Sexton played a pivotal role in the Lions defeat of Australia in the recent Test series.

Now, the former Leinster man is starting a new phase of his career at Racing Metro in Paris, which will make him the highest paid Irish rugby player ever, on a reported contract of €750,000 a year.

Sexton made the move when the IRFU failed to offer him an improved contract that would have granted him parity with Leinster’s best paid players.

The accounts filed by Sexton’s firm with the Companies Office show a vast improvement in its fortunes with accumulated profits increasing by 72%, from €130,698 to €225,188, in the 12 months to Sept 30, 2012.

Sexton won a Heineken Cup medal with Leinster during the period. In the year under view, his firm’s cash increased almost four-fold, from €20,857 to €81,762.

The figures show that the firm invested €100,000 in unidentified investments during the year while emoluments to the company’s two directors, Sexton and his father Jerry, totalled €30,132 last year.

A teacher by profession, Ms Priestley was appointed a director to the firm in April.

A relative latecomer to the international scene, Sexton made his Ireland debut in Nov 2009 and has played 36 times for his country.

During his time with Leinster, Sexton was central to the province’s three Heineken Cup wins.

Speaking earlier this month on starting with Paris Metro, Sexton said: “I can’t wait to get started, to prove myself in a new environment over there with a new language that I haven’tpractised that much over the past few weeks. So it’s a good challenge on many levels.”

In a previous interview, Sexton said: “My goal when I get there is to win the Top 14 and Heineken Cup with them.

“I’ll show people when I get there how well I want to do for my new club.

“People will label me whatever they want to now, but judge how much it means to me next year when I play there.”
