Former World Cup winner Mike Tindall was at North Tawton yesterday to lead a training session after the club was announced the winner of a national competition, QBE Hit Squad.
Members of North Tawton RFC, who play in South West Tribute Devon Two alongside Ilfracombe and Torrington, trained under the guidance of the former England centre.
North Tawton are one of four grassroots rugby clubs across the country to be awarded a QBE Hit Squad coach to mentor them this season.
Tindall, who worked alongside Gloucester’s forwards coach Andrew Stanley, will also attend North Tawton’s last home match of the season.
And the club have the opportunity to attend an open day where they can take advice from members of the England backroom staff.
Judges for the competition were impressed by the progress North Tawton have made with a young team in recent seasons.
Tindall, the Gloucester player-coach, said:Â “We went back to the core basic skills with the North Tawton to ensure I passed on best practice coaching and technical advice.
“The QBE Hit Squad session has been a great platform for me to give back to the grassroots game and to pass on my knowledge and expertise from both playing and coaching professional rugby.”
Simon Quick, North Tawton’s head coach, said: “To get the opportunity to learn from Mike Tindall is great for the club and utilising his coaching expertise and experiences in rugby will only benefit us as a club.”
