Welsh rugby icon Shane Williams surprises Bridgend students with college visit

Welsh rugby hero Shane Williams joined Bridgend students at their college this week to recognise their outstanding achievements.

Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen in Tondu held a record of achievement event at 1.30pm on Monday, for Year 11 students who are sitting their GCSE examinations this term.

Shane Williams, former British and Irish Lions star, was welcomed with open arms by students and teachers at the college. Apollo Teaching Services supported the awards and arranging the visit from the former Welsh winger.

James Jarrett, teacher and media coordinator at Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen, said: “The record of achievement event was for the pupils in Year 11, who will either be leaving us at the end of the school year or returning for their A-levels.

“It was held in the main hall, and Shane was absolutely fantastic. He signed autographs and had photos with pupils of all year groups in the school, not just Year 11, and then presented the awards and made a speech to the hall.

“He then went back and had more photos and signed more autographs with the students. He gave great time to us.”

Deputy headteacher Tony Morgan added: “We are grateful to Shane for joining us and giving out the hard-earned awards – and also thankful to Apollo Teaching Services for co-ordinating the visit.

“The awards recognise the contribution and commitment the Year 11 students have made to the school. I am proud of all the students’ hard work and effort over the course of the year and I am delighted that we are marking the occasion with a VIP guest to make it all the more special.”

Faith Olding, from Apollo Teaching Services, said: “We have close links with Y Dderwen and I am delighted to come along today to recognise the students’ achievements.

“We work closely in partnership with schools across the region to ensure continuity of education and we wish all the students the very best of luck with the next steps in their education.”

The college also hosted a separate event on Monday evening, presenting its Key Stage 4 pupils with awards and prizes.
