England will face Samoa in the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Games rugby sevens competition after qualifying second from Pool D in Glasgow.
Comfortable victories over Sri Lanka and Uganda with 97 points scored without reply, was followed by defeat to Australia, who face Wales for a place in the semi-final.
Simon Amor’s side could yet face Scotland in the last four after the hosts beat Canada to reach the last eight, but will have to overcome 2002 bronze medalists South Africa, who topped Pool B.
The other quarter-final sees New Zealand, chasing a fifth straight gold medal, taking on Kenya in the first scheduled match on Sunday.
Rugby sevens becomes an Olympic sport from Rio 2016 and all eight teams will be looking to lay down a marker ahead of its debut in two years time.
New Zealand go into Sunday’s second day of competition as the favourites to win gold, having won all three of their pool games, but were forced to work to beat Scotland before plundering 98 points in dispatching Canada and Barbados.
Scotland gave the home crowd at Ibrox something to shout about by reaching the knock-out stage, a finish in stark contrast to their form in the Sevens World Series.
Meanwhile Samoa, England’s opponents in the third quarter final, topped Pool C after securing three successive wins, with Wales qualifying as runners-up, after the 2010 Sevens World Series champions prevailed in the final match.
