England rugby sevens head coach Simon Amor has hailed his side’s heart and desire despite their defeat to Samoa in the medal quarter-finals this afternoon.
England missed out on a place in the last four of the Commonwealth Games by a solitary point as Samoa held on to a 15-14 victory at Ibrox.
Amor admitted that his side weren’t good enough in certain aspects to warrant the victory, but heaped praise on the level of commitment shown by the players.
“[I"m] naturally [frustrated], but I’m incredibly proud of the effort the guys showed right the way through this weekend. Their heart and their desire throughout was excellent,” he told reporters.
“Unfortunately their decision-making and their execution wasn’t good enough and, as a result, we didn’t take our chances. At the top level you need your best guys to turn on the form and make good decisions, but unfortunately losing Tom [Mitchell to injury] was a tough one for us.
“He’s an important part of our program and makes a lot of our decisions. His leadership is a big loss, but these things happen in sevens. I’m really proud of the way the guys rallied round and actually put in a good performance in some challenging conditions.”
England will now face hosts Scotland in the plate semi-finals this evening.
