PLANS have been unveiled to erect a statue of one of rugby league’s all-time greats, Billy Boston MBE â with the help of a sculptor from Hull.
Steve Winterburn, who has previously worked with Hull KR and Hull FC on numerous projects, will begin work on the statue once funding has been secured.
Welsh-born superstar Boston, who will turn 80 next month, was well known for his record-breaking playing days in the 1950s and ’60s for Wigan.
The statue will be installed on a plinth in his home town next year, but the team behind the £100,000 project is now ready to go public with the help of fans fundraising.
Steve is also working on another statue featuring Billy, which is due to be installed outside Wembley Stadium, and will also include four other legends â Eric Ashton, Gus Risman, Alex Murphy and Martin Offiah.
Boston said the statue of him was “the ultimate honour.”
“I feel so proud that people want to recognise my career like this. It’s a great honour,” he said.
“Wigan has had some great players over the years so to be recognised like this means so much.
“Wigan is home to me, the people have always been so welcoming and kind to me and my family.
“They’ve been fantastic and I’ve never ever thought about going back to Cardiff.
“They’ve treated my family so well, Wigan is such a special place with special people.”
Cheques can be made payable to The Billy Boston Statue Trust and sent to: The Billy Boston Statue Trust, c/o Central Park, Montrose Avenue, Wigan, WN5 9XL.
