WELSH entertainer Max Boyce was sent to have quadruple heart bypass surgery – after being checked out by Welsh rugby legend JPR Williams.

Max, now recovering from the operation, has revealed that JPR, a qualified doctor, gave the entertainer a once-over after he had a turn at his local rugby club.

Max was due to perform at Carmarthen’s Lyric Theatre in October as part of his autumn tour, but was forced cancel the show along with a string of others to have his heart op.

A spokeswoman for Theatre Sir Gar said at the time: “Max has every confidence in his surgeons and their team and is hoping to be back to full fitness and performing again in 2015.”

Max added: “I feel lucky to still be here and realise just how previous all this is. There’s an old saying, which may sound corny but happens to be true: Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift.”
