Outspoken former Wallaby David Campese has tipped England and Australia to qualify from Pool A in next season’s World Cup and believes Wales will be the team to miss out on a place in the quarter-finals.

England, Wales and Australia will all tackle each other in one of the hardest pools in recent World Cup history. All three will harbour some hopes of winning the tournament but just two will qualify for the final eight. They will be joined in the pool by Fiji and a team yet to qualify but for Campese, he feels Australia will do enough to get through the pool as will hosts England.

“It’s such a tough a pool and whoever comes out of the top of that group will probably go onto win the World Cup,” Campese told Wales Online. “This is because they will have hard games where New Zealand and South Africa could go through from their pool with easier matches. You have three top teams there in that group with Wales, England and Australia.

“They all have the added pressure of knowing they have to finish in the top two otherwise that’s it for them. I obviously hope it will be Australia and I think they will be joined by England.”

Campese was heavily critical of Robbie Deans’ tenure in charge of the Wallabies but is happy with the work current boss Ewen McKenzie is doing in Australia. He added: “The Wallabies are looking good and going to get better. Things have moved on from the Lions a year ago where Robbie Deans was the coach and I don’t think he did the right thing by Australian rugby for years.

“He did not understand the Australian style of rugby. Ewen McKenzie has come on board and moved a few players around. Ewen is an ex Australian player who starred in the World Cup of 1991 and is trying to bring some culture and passion back.

“England are getting better and they proved that against the All Blacks. I can’t see how Wales are going to improve in the same fashion and they have some issues with some of their top players getting older. But you can say what you want now. It’s 12 months out and you still have to deliver when it counts.”
