Cornish Rebels ran out clear winners at Redruth’s Recreation Ground on Saturday, as they thwarted an attempted invasion by the North Devon Raiders to win the game comfortably 67-16.
It was Martyn Lawrance who opened the scoring, with an effort straight under the posts just five minutes in, Grant Thirlby however failed to add the extras on this occasion. He made up for that a few minutes later as he converted Ethan Pattison’s effort to put the Rebels 10-0 up with 10 minutes gone.
He continued to boss the opening 20 minutes by adding a try of his own, which he converted.
A late Martyn Lawrance offload in the corner, put in Raphael Baragwanath for his first Rebels try, and shortly after Rebels head coach Jonny Platt found himself at the foot of the goal, but being faced by a wall of red Raiders defenders he opted to kick over to add a single point.
Jono Jones came off the bench to touch down before the first Raiders reply of the day; full back Ashley Deakin finally broke the Rebels’ defence to score which was converted by half-back Mike Prestidge.
There was time for one more try before half-time. Raphael Baragwanath ran 65 meters after breaking the Raiders defence, and was chased down hard by Prestidge. The Rebels winger had a slight edge on pace and touched down with a swan dive under the posts.
The second half started the same as the first with a Martyn Lawrance try, with another conversion missed, this time by Jonny Platt.
Prestidge then converted his own effort for the Raiders setting the game up at 41-12 with 20 minutes to go.
Two more tries; one each for Rebels fullback James Wilson and Elliot Heard, before Nathan Allen ran almost the full length of the pitch to score the try of the game.
Heard’s and Allens tries were both converted making it 57-12 before Mike Peek scored a consolation for North Devon.
Efforts from Scott Murray and a third for Martyn Lawrance, and another conversion from Thirlby completed the rout.
North Devon travelled light and put in a big performance in high temperatures.
Rebels Secretary Rob Butland praised a disciplined performance from his team.
He said: “We are starting to drill down into the things we hadn’t quite grasped yet. Last weekend in the Titans match we lost out a lot to silly things like at the playing of the ball and cheap offloads which were costing us possession, which was possibly down to the squad lacking a little bit of experience.
“We worked hard at training this week and we were far more disciplined around those things today, plus we didn’t miss anywhere near as many tackles.
“The lads have worked hard and are starting to understand that we need to get the basics right if we want to keep winning week in, week out.”
He also praised the attitude of the Raiders team given their lack of squad depth.
He said: “We have been there ourselves. We took 12 lads to their place last year and they played with a squad or 18 or 19, and it was ten degrees hotter then too.
“Today they have travelled a light, but actually played very well. They worked hard at defending, and the scoreline doesn’t do that justice. We look forward to heading up there in July.”
The Rebels now look toward defending their South West Challenge Cup title, first in the semi-final at The Recreation Ground, Redruth next Sunday at 2.30pm. Free Entry, as always and match programmes available at £2.
