Blue Coat rugby quintet get call-up for England duty

A fine season of touch rugby at Reading Blue Coat school has yielded England Under-18 call-ups for five pupils.

Alex Scott, Jacob Scadden, Aidan Larsen, Matt Smart and Adam Bailey have all been named in an inaugural national squad which will be heading to Wales in August to compete in the European Championships.

The quintet are part of the school’s Bro’s side which play in Division 1 of the O2 Touch League.

A return of four wins, two defeats and a draw saw them progress to the semi-finals, where they were edged out 5-4 in the dying minutes by Vikings.

They returned to the field the following week, where they were comfortable 4-0 winners over the Dirty Dumpers in the third/fourth place play-off.

Meanwhile, Blue Coat’s Flamingo’s mixed Division 1 side, boasting six wins in seven games, went on to defeat Vikings in the final.

It was a great end for the boys and girls who are moving on later in the summer.

Junior side Falcons enjoyed a blistering debut season in Division 2. The mixed team topped their group with four straight wins, setting up a final with the Vixens. Up against another side containing England players, and with half the side away on activities week, Falcons still put up a strong performance, but suffered a 4-2 reverse.

Nicholas Matenga, touch coach at Blue Coat who has recently been appointed England U18 mixed coach, said: “To watch the players grow and develop this year has been a privilege.

“They have become more confident and bold and their skill levels have improved immensely.

“I would like to thank all those who played and supported us during this season.

“Alex Scott, Jacob Scadden and Aiden Larsen will be hugely missed; they have been excellent role models for the younger students and lead by example on and off the field.”
