INSPIRATION: Michael Owen with Turnford School students (s)
YOUNG rugby players from Turnford School received a training session to remember as former Wales skipper Michael Owen dropped in for a visit.
Owen, a British and Irish Lion who led Wales to the Grand Slam in the 2005 Six Nations, has recently taken up a position as director of rugby at Haileybury.
He took time out to pass on his skills to Year 7 and 8 students at Turnford.
Owen ran through some basic drills and emphasised how rugby can be a positive tool to engage young people and teach them about respect, control and sportsmanship.
The boys were clearly in awe of Owen as he talked to them before the training session about his experiences in the sport.
Students got the chance to ask him questions about his career and Owen said that his toughest opponents were the New Zealand All Blacks team.
Adam Clark, head of PE at Turnford School told the Mercury: âIt was a privilege to have Michael Owen take time to come and coach our students.
“He was extremely patient and had time for all of them. He was really impressed with the level of skill and determination he saw.
“The boys thoroughly enjoyed the training session and particularly appreciated hearing about Michaelâs own experiences.
“He is a great inspiration for them and has already promised to come back in September to do some more coaching.
“Weâd like to thank Michael Owen and Haileybury School for this fantastic opportunity, and we look forward to welcoming him back soon.”
