Focus on Rugby: Wales are in a rut, selection wise and tactics wise and they ...

Wales have named their side to take on South Africa in their own backyard in Saturday’s second Test, and, suffice to say, there have been many questions raised on social media.

Many fans had expected more than the two changes made, with the likes of Mike Phillips keeping his place despite pressure from Gareth Davies.

So, is Gatland right to keep faith with the tried and tested? Or, will Wales struggle to improve until he tries something different?

In our special summer Focus on Rugby show, rugby writers Delme Parfitt and Gareth Griffiths assess the Wales selection and debate whether change is needed.

Watch the video debate and let us know where you stand…

The key issues

Wales’ stagnation

Delme says: “Wales are in a rut, selection wise and tactics wise and they have been since beating England 30-3 in 2013.

“This has been going on for over a year, where Wales have been fair to middling at best and poor at worst.”

Adam Jones’ axing

Gareth says: “A lot of those players are now coming to the end.

“The likes of Gethin Jenkins, Adam Jones, Mike Phillips – their big test was always going to be to make the World Cup.

“He (Gatland) is going to have to make some big calls a decide that one or two of these aren’t going to get there, because it’s a long road.”

“That will be one of Gatland’s toughest calls – to get rid of that experience.”
