Gerald Davies, a member of Wales’ seventies golden era, British Lion, and no slouch crossing the whitewash himself, has come up with his favourite 15, in his first solo-written book since his autobiography was published in 1979.

He said: “For all the drama of the last-minute kick at goal, there is no sporting theatre as epic as the try in rugby football.

“Such a selection is, of course, invidious; subjective, as such choices must be, they are sure to prompt disagreement and debate, in the best traditions of those rugby discussions which were part and parcel of Sundays in Llansaint, the village in Carmarthenshire where I was brought up.”

Gerald, the chairman of the British and Irish Lions Committee, set himself the impossible task of selecting fifteen of the most memorable tries ever scored by the Welsh international team, but then also of choosing the best of these fifteen.

But with typical modesty, the dazzling and deadly sidestepping winger declined to include any of his own in the list – such as his 1971 touchdown against Scotland, converted by John Taylor to win the match.

Instead, he offers nostalgia, analysis, romance and anecdotal snippets with each try.

The Greatest Welsh Tries Ever by Gerald Davies is published by Gomer Press.
