Ambitious Plans At Novos Rugby Club, Where England Captains Are Made

Novos Rugby Club, which has produced the last two England women’s captains are hoping to raise £200,000 to improve facilities at their Benton ground.

The club has already received a £50,000 grant from Sport England to build a ‘minis’ pitch on a redundant car park behind the clubhouse.

The new pitch will allow the club to provide dedicated training for young people, specifically under 13 to under 18 girls.

Novos will try to raise £50,000 themselves, and hope the RFU match the funding with an additional £100,000, to help improve drainage on their three current pitches as well as build the new junior pitch.

England Women’s captain Katie McClean played for Novos, as well as former captain Sarah Hunter and forward Tamara Taylor.

Janette Shaw, England Women’s Team Manager, used to play for Novos and is a teacher at Kenton School.

She said: “It is such a supportive club, any talent we have we’ve nurtured well and allowed them to progress to be on that bigger stage.”

Novos director of rugby Graeme Cooper said: “It will have a massive impact, we are one of the few clubs who are growing in number year on year.

“We are the main provider in the east Newcastle for rugby at all age levels, and the facilities are desperately needed to further enhance our reputation as the main provider of rugby in this area.”
