Premiership Rugby’s plans to launch a breakaway European competition next

season collapsed last night after the French clubs, its key ally in the

proposed formation of the Rugby Champions Cup (RCC), voted to remain in the

Heineken Cup for one more year.



Paul Goze, president of the Ligue ­National de Rugby (LNR), insisted that the

French had not stabbed their ­English counterparts in the back, but were

looking to buy more time to implement a new European competition for the

2015-16 season.



However, the LNR decision was ­taken without the knowledge of Premiership

Rugby officials, who were left to come
