A strong defensive display by Wheatley Hills was not enough for victory as they narrowly lost 8-7 at Huddersfield YMCA in their latest North One East clash on Saturday.
Rob Worrincy’s first half try and the subsequent conversion from full back Johnny Woodcock gave Hills the lead after 20 minutes.
Bt the hosts hit back with a try and penalty shortly before the break, and the score remained unchanged throughout the second half.
“We played well and defended well,†said Wheatley manager Kris Fullman.
“It was just down to some key decisions which could’ve gone either way and it was unfortunate for us.
“But we’re getting a lot of confidence and the boys are playing very well with good team spirit and we’re not far off being able to challenge anyone in this league.â€
Thornensians improved in the second half but went down 28-10 at Aireborough in Yorkshire Three.
Trailing 21-5 at half time, Thorne managed to hold their hosts to just one try in the second half, but it wasn’t enough for the win.
No 8 Andy Evans got Thorne off the mark with a pushover try after 35 minutes, and their second came on the hour mark from second row Dan Riley with a powerful move.
Thorne kicked poorly for touch and gave possession away too easily in the first half, as Aireborough’s large pack dominated and distributed well.
Thorne showed good character to dominate territory after the break, but they couldn’t do enough to challenge for the lead.
