The head coach believes England are on the right World Cup track after winning two autumn matches and just losing out in the third to the dominant All Blacks.
Wing Julian Savea grabbed two tries for the visitors and Kieran Read also went over to break the hearts of captain Chris Robshaw and his men after England had fought back from two early setbacks to give the New Zealanders a scare.
Lancaster, whose side led 22-20 at one stage, said: âWe matched them in every department apart from the match points.
âI thought we were dominant up front and could have got a few more penalties from the referee when we were close to their line.
âWe did not make them pay when we needed to and it was typical of the All Blacks to win in that manner. But we can take a lot of positives from this performance.
âItâs been a good autumn campaign but would have been perfect had we won today. We are a team building for the next World Cup and we are definitely heading in the right direction.â
Robshaw, who finished the match with his eye swollen and almost closed after a big hit, said: âIt was as physical as they come.
âIt was fierce from the very start and didnât stop. On another day we could have won but thatâs why they are the world champions.â
Joe Launchbury went over for Englandâs only try while Owen Farrell kicked 17 points but it was not enough to upset the Southern Hemisphere giants.
The Twickenham crowd managed to sing Sweet Chariot so loud they drowned out the haka â but England found themselves 14-3 down within 20 minutes of the start.
