Rugby League World Cup 2013: Scotland set for vital USA clash

Scotland coach Steve McCormack says his side have a “massive chance” of reaching the World Cup quarter-finals ahead of a crucial game against USA.

The Scots have been involved in two thrillers,

edging out Tonga

and drawing

30-30 with Italy,

setting up an exciting climax to the group stage.

An inter-group win on Thursday would give Scotland the chance to progress.

The Americans, competing at their first World Cup, have impressed in beating Wales and the Cook Islands.

Looking ahead to taking on USA in Salford, McCormack said: “They had a fantastic result against Wales – but I think the bottom line is on Thursday.

“If we can beat the USA it all goes down to the Tonga v Italy game on Sunday and it could come down to points difference. So we’re in with a massive chance of getting through to the quarter-finals.”

Going into the final round of qualifying games, Italy possess a greater goal difference than Scotland, with only one team qualifying from Group C.

Reflecting on Sunday’s tussle with Italy, McCormack said he is “immensely proud” but added that he was “disappointed” his side did not win.

“We had a couple of opportunities at the last second to go for a point and Italy just charged the ball down,” he added.

“Nobody gave us a chance before the game of winning. We’re undefeated now and we face the USA with everything to play for.”

This is Scotland’s third appearance at a World Cup and they have already bettered previous displays in 2000 and 2008.
