Rugby League: Kallum Watkins wants to make his little lad proud

The Leeds star’s partner Sophie gave birth to their son, Andre, in March and he has since enhanced his status as a centre of world-class repute.

Watkins, 22, said: “My little lad is all grown up now, trying to walk and stuff, and it’s fantastic being a dad. My missus is a great mother too and I’m looking forward to the future with them.

“It’s a dream come true having a little lad so young. I just want to do well for them both and make them proud.”

Watkins is spending most of his time at England’s training base at Loughborough University ahead of Saturday’s quarter-final showdown with France in Wigan.

He added: “I probably see my son two or three times a week at the moment. But making sacrifices is part of being a rugby player and if you want to get to the top you have got to make them. It’s something I have had to get used to, but being a dad gives me more of an incentive to challenge myself in these situations. It makes me want to do better than ever before.”
