MILTON Keynes Wolves get the third season in their history under way on Saturday with a charity match at Emerson Valley.
There is another week until the inaugural East Rugby League 9s tournament, which will mark the official start of the 2014 season, but Wolves will be able to warm up for that this weekend with the game for a good cause.
Club captain Scott Aspinall, who was instrumental in founding the club back in 2012, was keen to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Aspinallâs son Nathan was born with a coarctation of the aorta â a life-threatening condition that narrows the major artery carrying blood away from the heart â and holes in the heart.
He underwent open-heart surgery at Great Ormond Street while only three days old.
Thankfully, that operation was a success, and Nathan is now a fit, healthy three year old.
Aspinall approached local rivals Bedford Tigers, who generously agreed to support this game by sending across their seconds team with their firsts already having a game lined up for the day.
In the spirit of this charity game, every player will be asked to donate £5 to play, and the teams will be mixed up to encourage friendly competition.
Aspinall said: âGreat Ormond Street saved my sonâs life at just three days old, and I wanted to do something to say thank you.â
A charity auction will take place in the Emerson Valley clubhouse after the game, with a signed shirt donated by Super League side St Helens, and a ball signed by rugby union big boys Wasps up for grabs.
Anyone who wants to submit an early bid for either of these items can do so by e-mailing MiltonKeynesRL@gmail.com âall proceeds will be donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital.
