MOSELEY head coach Kevin Maggs has revealed that Olly Robinson – son of Bristol director of rugby Andy – will join his father’s club ahead of next season.
Robinson junior, a 22-year-old openside flanker, impressed in Bristol’s recent 33-24 win over Moseley at Billesley Common, scoring a try as the home side threatened to fight back against the GKIPA Championship table-toppers.
Maggs, who will lose a number of his frontline performers this summer, has been dealt another blow with the news that Robinson, pictured, is moving on. “Olly has gone because of the environment at Bristol,” said Maggs. “He will learn from some excellent coaches, not only his Dad but the likes of Sean Holley and Danny Wilson.
“They are putting together a very experienced squad of players that will help him – and, while they are not in the Premiership yet, you can’t really blame him.”
Robinson will get the opportunity to train alongside back-row forwards such as Ryan Jones, Jack Lam and Nick Koster, who have joined Bristol for next season, while his new club are also understood to be closing on a deal to sign Ross Rennie on a permanent basis following a successful loan spell.
“Olly is a fantastic player; he’s got a huge heart and an unbelievable work-rate,” said Maggs. “He is a superb link player between forwards and backs. He’s not the biggest – almost all Premiership back rows seem to be 6ft 3ins and 17st – but I think he’s got a bright future ahead of him in the right team because he’s an old-fashioned No. 7.”
Bristol are in the process of concluding another phase of their squad-building for next season, with the signing of hooker Chris Brooker from Worcester understood to be imminent, along with deals for Rennie and Robinson.
Wing Andy Short, meanwhile, is confident Bristol are peaking at the right time as they continue their march toward a potential league and cup double.
Bristol will be playing knockout rugby for the rest of the season, with this weekend’s British Irish Cup semi-final against Leeds being followed by a two-legged Championship semi-final against Rotherham.
Bristol will go into Sunday’s cup semi on the back of a 13-match winning run in the league – and a 12-game winning streak in all competitions.
Short, who scored two tries in Bristol’s 55-31 win over London Scottish at the weekend, said: “We’re starting to really peak at the right time. It’s pointless peaking at the start of the season, or in the middle.
“We’re getting to the point now where there’s a lot of confidence in the squad – we’ve got an unbeaten record of 13 games in the league – and we’re going into these semi-finals in both competitions in really good stead.
“We’ve got a few things to fine-tune – both attacking and defensively – but confidence is high and the boys are thriving off that.
“We know we’ve still got a lot of work to do – we’re not the finished article yet – but it’s great that we’re starting to peak at the right time.”
Several of the players who guided Bristol to victory at the weekend are likely to make way when Leeds visit the Memorial Stadium in the BI Cup on Sunday. But Short explained how, whether players are in or out of the starting XV, they are all buying into the quest for double glory. “Even though we’re competing against each other, everyone is there to help each other push on,” he said.
