Ankle injury rules Bath Rugby flanker Matt Garvey out of Northampton Saints ...

Bath Rugby do not yet know if Matt Garvey’s ankle injury will rule him out for the rest of the season, although the flanker is definitely out of Friday’s huge Aviva Premiership showdown with Northampton Saints.

Garvey had to be helped from the field in the closing stages of Bath’s Amlin Cup semi-final victory over Wasps at Adams Park on Sunday after landing heavily at a lineout.

Bath first-team coach Toby Booth has confirmed 26-year-old Garvey will join fellow flanker Francois Louw on the sidelines for this weekend’s crunch clash against Premiership play-off rivals Northampton at The Rec.

Booth said: “Garvs is not in a great shape. He’s with the consultants now to see the extent of the damage but it’s not going to be short term I don’t think.

“We don’t know if it’s his season over.

“He came down poorly at a lineout and rolled his ankle. He’s a big guy and when you come down from a height you’re always going to take a little bit of damage.

“He’s still on crutches and in a boot but you’ve got to wait for the swelling to go down and the consultants to have a look.

“It’s bitterly disappointing because he was exceptional on Sunday and has been one of our leading players throughout the year.

“We’re disappointed for him but we are a tight squad and Carl Fearns has come back from injury great and Flow is pretty much where he needs to be. He won’t make it this week but will be there soon after.”

Garvey signed for Bath from Premiership rivals London Irish last summer and has quickly established himself as a key figure at The Rec.

He has started 18 of Bath’s 20 Premiership matches so far this season and can operate either at blindside flanker or in the second row.
