The Newcastle Knights and the National Rugby League (NRL) have each made a touching gesture of support to paralysed rugby league player Alex McKinnon, extending his playing contract and offering him a job for life, respectively.
A statement on Newcastle’s official website explains:
The Club and McKinnon were in the midst of finalising a contract extension prior to the young forwardâs injury in Round 3.
CEO Matt Gidley said the Knights would honour its contract offer, with McKinnon guaranteed employment at the club. The details of his employment will be discussed with McKinnon when he is ready.
The NRL, meanwhile, have offered McKinnon a “job for life” and will set up a foundation to raise funds for his recovery.
McKinnon was diagnosed as a quadriplegic after suffering a major injury during the Knights’ Round 3 match against Melbourne Storm in March.Â
