THE chairman of Neath rugby club has been arrested on suspicion of fraud and money laundering.
Geraint Hawkes and another man, who is understood to be his accountant, were arrested after a number of warrants were executed as part of an ongoing fraud investigation.
The operation involved officers from the Wales Regional Asset Recovery Team, supported by officers from the National Crime Agency.
Last November Mr Hawkes held an open meeting at The Gnoll to reassure supporters that the club was on a safe footing.
The All Blacks are currently second from bottom in the Welsh Premiership and visit Bedwas on Saturday.
A spokesman for Gwent Police, on behalf of the Wales Regional Asset Recovery Team, said: âAs part of an ongoing complex fraud investigation officers from the Wales Regional Asset Recovery Team, supported by officers from the National Crime Agency, have today executed warrants at a number of addresses in the South Wales area, including at Neath RFC.
âTwo men, a 47-year old and a 44-year-old from the Swansea area, have been arrested on suspicion of fraud and money laundering.
âThey remain in police custody at this time and are assisting officers with their enquiries. A 73-year old female is also assisting officers with their enquiries.â
The asset recovery team is one nine units established in England and Wales in 2004. It undertakes multi-agency investigations involving other law and Government organisations.
