Earls eager to nail down Ireland spot

Earls, 25, featured in all five of Ireland’s RBS 6 Nations matches, coming off the bench in the victory over Wales and the defeat to England before starting on the wing against France, Scotland and Italy.

Against Italy however, he picked up a shoulder injury and while he returned for Munster’s Heineken Cup semi-final against Clermont, by his own admission he was far from his best.

Earls’ versatility often counts for him as he can fill in at both centre and on the wing but as he targets a spot in Joe Schmidt’s side, he admits he doesn’t care what jersey he’s wearing.

“Last year was a bit of a disaster,” Earls told the Irish Independent. “I kind of got through the Six Nations, but did my shoulder against Italy.

“I managed to struggle back for the Clermont game. I wasn’t (at my best) at all. I felt fine all week, but then the intensity and physicality of the game was just too much. I broke down. It was fine when I was tackling, but when I was being tackled was a disaster.

“Then, missing the Lions was tough, you know. But I was delighted for the lads who had great victories.

“I wasn’t expecting to be there. You set your goals, but the Six Nations – well, it is hard when you’re not starting for Ireland to try and get on. That makes it harder for the Lions coaches to notice you.

“My main goal this season is to be healthy and playing and I don’t really care where I play.”
