Rugby League - Hull v Wigan ratings

JAMIE SHAUL – Hull’s rookie full-back belied someone in just his sixth game for them, and but for Josh Charnley’s tackle, would have scored one of the all-time great Wembley tries with a length-of-the-field effort. 7.

JASON CROOKES – Played in the absence of Tom Lineham but short of a great tackle to deny Pat Richards early on, was unable to fill the void sufficiently. 5.

BEN CROOKS – The centre looked like a man who, contrary to his coach’s claim, was not fit. Made three glaring handling errors, the second of which led to Iain Thornley’s try. 5.

KIRK YEAMAN – The centre’s game is based on power and hitting the line at speed. There was none of that. 5.

TOM BRISCOE – Hull needed their international winger to prove his worth but all too often he remained on the fringe of the action. 5.

DANIEL HOLDSWORTH – Much was made of Hull’s reliance on his kicking game and general scheming but a poor performance up front meant he got little chance to shine. 5.

JACOB MILLER – Miller is youthful and tries to pep his side up whenever he has the ball, but sadly his execution was lacking, with a number of poor decisions made. 5.

MARK O’MELEY – The brutish prop is retiring at the end of the season and wanted to go out on a high, but this was one of his quieter days. 6.

DANNY HOUGHTON – Worked tirelessly but set the tone for a shocking Hull display with a needless run at the line on the last tackle early on. 6.

LIAM WATTS – His discipline was poor early on and his work with the ball did not help him redeem himself. 6.

GARETH ELLIS – The last thing Hull needed to see was their inspirational captain go off injured, but that he did after 14 minutes. He returned in the 51st but made little impact. 6.

DANNY TICKLE – The departing forward acted as a gate for Thornley’s opening try and made numerous other errors. 5.

JOE WESTERMAN – Failed to chime in with the play-making Hull so desperately needed. 6.

REPLACEMENTS

ANDY LYNCH – Grafted as he always does, but offered little more. 6.

RICHARD WHITING – Uncharacteristically poor with his discipline after coming on for Ellis, but at least tried to make things happen. 6.

AARON HEREMAIA – Offered Hull some much-needed zip off the bench but conceded a needless second-half penalty which allowed Wigan to extend their lead. 6.

JAY PITTS – Went off injured in the second half after an anonymous showing highlighted only by an aborted chip and charge to the line. 6.

WIGAN

SAM TOMKINS – The sport’s stellar name was quiet for 79 minutes but, ever a man for the big occasion, danced his way to a last-touch try. 7.

JOSH CHARNLEY – Had little chance to shine in attack but his try-saving tackle on Shaul was arguably the play of the match. 7.

DARRELL GOULDING – The centre’s afternoon ended on a sad note when he was carried from the field on a stretcher after a collision with Kirk Yeaman. 6.

IAIN THORNLEY – Made light work of Danny Tickle to score the first try, which will surely do for him. 7.

PAT RICHARDS – Had little more to do than stand and deliver with the boot, kicking four from four. Will head home at the end of the season with another medal. 7.

BLAKE GREEN – Kept Wigan on the front by playing a simple but effective role in the halves. 6.

MATTY SMITH – Kicked well in the conditions, with his precision perfect for the damp conditions. Named as the Lance Todd Trophy winner. 7.

LEE MOSSOP – Toiled hard and made sure Hull’s forwards continued to cough the ball up. 6.

MICHAEL MCILORUM – Like most of Wigan’s players he kept it simple, making his passes and doing the job. 7.

BEN FLOWER – The prop was outstanding in his early stint and helped Wigan get on top of Hull in the first half. 7.

HARRISON HANSEN – Followed the suit of his team-mates by rolling his sleeves up and playing the conditions well. 7.

LIAM FARRELL – Not at his rampaging best but did not have to be. 6.

SEAN O’LOUGHLIN – Wigan’s captain made sure his players stayed on message and stuck to their carefully-crafted plan. 7.

REPLACEMENTS

CHRIS TUSON – Came on midway through the second half and did what was asked of him. 6.

GIL DUDSON – Hulking prop worked tirelessly and deserved to be on the winning side. 6.

SCOTT TAYLOR – His decision to leave hometown club Hull KR was vindicated as he picked up a first career medal. 6.

LOGAN TOMKINS – Shared a special moment with brother Sam as they won the trophy together. Busy when he came on. 6.
