THE completion of a £300,000 state-of-the-art artificial pitch has transformed Upper Clapton Rugby Club.

The official opening of the 4G surface was carried out by former England, Leicester and Lions full-back Tim Stimpson with Ian Swindale, past president of the Thornwood Common club, in front of 400 people.

He also presented a cheque from Sports England Inspired Facilities fund which helped fund the project.

Stimpson applauded the efforts of the rugby club and their tenacity in developing the all-weather pitch and looked forwarded to visiting the club again in the coming seasons to see the completion of a new club house at the Upland Road club, who play in the Essex League.

He was encouraged to hear the good news regarding recruitment at all levels of the club and the work carried out in local schools and colleges

Cash to pay for the project has come through grants and loans from a number of leading sports authorities including the RFU, Grange Farm Trust and Epping Forest District Council.

Three floodlit five-a-side football pitches or the entire area are now available to hire to local sports clubs and will be used by the club for training.
