Rugby boy"s "best day ever" as England ball carrier

A YOUNG rugby fan from Farnborough walked out with England at Twickenham this month after being selected as the ball carrier for an international game.

Angus Murray, of Cove Road, was picked for the honour at the start of the home side’s clash with Australia. Ten-year-old Angus, who is a hooker for Farnborough RUFC Under 10s, met England players Toby Flood and skipper Chris Robshaw.

His father, Jason, said his son entered a competition with the England Rugby Supporters Club to be a mascot, but had been unsuccessful.

Mr Murray described how after this disappointment an email came through “out of the blue” asking if Angus would like to carry the ball out for the game against the Wallabies.

“Naturally we said yes,” said Mr Murray. “Angus was very excited – Toby Flood is his hero, second only to Jonny Wilkinson.

“He was just awestruck afterwards, he said it was ‘the best day ever’. It was an exciting experience and something that will live with him forever.

“I was very proud to see him do it. I have played rugby for years and to go and watch Angus carry the ball out at Twickers was awesome.

“I just think it is a fantastic thing for the RFU to do – it inspires young players.”
