You never stop learning, says Bristol Rugby"s Mark Sorenson

MARK Sorenson may be 34 and have a wealth of experience of rugby in both hemispheres – but the New Zealander believes you never stop learning about the game.

Sorenson, who joined Bristol from Northampton during the summer, said he has continued to learn – both from his new coaches and team-mates.

But he said: “For me, it’s about learning from all of our coaches and the approaches they have. There is loads for me to learn here, which is fantastic.

“I’ve been at a few different clubs and been coached by different coaches throughout New Zealand and over here, and it’s great that I’m constantly being tested and learning on a daily basis.

“You don’t ever want to stop learning – there’s always things to do differently. And, because it’s a team sport, you’ve got to learn about the guys you’re playing with as well, because they are the ones out on the pitch with you.

“They’ve got to learn about you as well, so everyone gets the best out of each other. In the short time I’ve been here, it already feels as if everyone is buying into that and we’re doing a lot of stuff on and off the field.”

Sorenson linked up with his new team-mates in early July – and has already been impressed by the ambition at Bristol.

However, this will be the club’s fifth in the Championship – and the Kiwi knows that is not where they and their supports want, and need, to be.

“It’s a huge club,” he said. “We had an evening at the Mem recently, learning about the history of the club, and you realise the passion that’s here. I don’t think there’s any two ways about it.

“The club hasn’t been where it wants to be in the past few years – I think that’s obvious – but the foundations are being laid to get us back to where the supporters want us to be. The ambition for everyone here is to be back at the top level of English rugby.”

Bristol, having been beaten 69-5 at Bath last weekend, head to another Premiership side – Exeter – on Saturday.
