Wales Rugby Union"s new proposal offers hope to resolve dispute with regions

On Tuesday the regions had expressed their backing for Premiership Rugby’s

proposal for a Champions Cup format in Europe next season.

The continuing face-off in European rugby has led to an alliance building

between the English and Welsh factions, the 12 Premiership clubs

acknowledging that they would consider an expanded format to accommodate the

four Welsh regions if other options did not come to fruition.

Despite being portrayed as mavericks intent on forging their own paths to the

detriment of their relationship with the unions, Premiership Rugby also

voiced its preference for future business to be conducted under the broad

umbrella control of the unions.

It released a statement on Thursday night urging a swift resolution to the

dispute.

“On behalf of its clubs, Premiership Rugby today welcomed the news that the

Welsh Regions are backing the creation of the Rugby Champions Cup next

season and has endorsed the need for resolution in a short timescale,” said

Premiership Rugby chief executive, Mark McCafferty.
