Foreign Office thanks "nice" rugby fans

Fans are also offered advice on arriving in sufficient time for kick off,

avoiding pickpockets, and how to navigate the French public transport

system.

Anglo-French rivalry was maintained with the words: “Have a great time, and

may the best team (hopefully England) win!”

Previous advice articles issued by the Embassy include warnings about not

speeding en route to Le Mans 24h race and advice on marriage in France. In

an article from September 2013 on how to live safely as a student, the

British Embassy in Paris wrote: “We’re not going to tell you not to drink

(that probably won’t work!) But do make sure that you drink sensibly.”

However, the message did not make any mention of the need to be wary of food

sold by vendors at rugby matches. Anthony Peregrine, who writes a column on

France for Telegraph Travel, has previously

warned of the perils of undercooked sausages
, after being crippled for

four days by a poorly-grilled specimen at Agen Rugby Club: “The hotel called

a doctor who proved more interested in talking rugby than my imminent death.

‘It will just have to work its way through the system,’ he said. ‘If any

more works its way through my bloody system I’ll have to bring in outside

supplies,’ I replied.”

Those who do head to Paris would be wise to consult our expert

guide to the French capital
, which features some of the best bars in

which to enjoy a pre-match drink, as well as the best non-rugby related

attractions, shops and restaurants the city has to offer.
