Rugby Union: Newcastle prepared for Senior Vase semi-final

NEWCASTLE hit the road to Northamptonshire as slight underdogs in their Senior Vase semi-final.

Castle face Corby-based outfit Stewart and Lloyds as they attempt to progress to the final.

Newcastle have produced some exceptional rugby to reach this stage, which included their best performance of the season in beating Ashby 30-15 in the quarter-finals.

Stewart and Lloyds will provide a stern test, however, as they are in with a real shot of winning the Midlands Three East South title this season.

They sit in third place, eight points behind leaders Biggleswade, but do have a game in hand.

Newcastle, though, will travel with mixed emotions after last Saturday’s 22-22 draw with Midlands Three West North leaders Veseyans.

Castle made use of the slope and wind to establish a 22-0 half-time lead to put them in contention to inflict a first league defeat of the season on their rivals.

Sam Evans, Ollie Smalley and Matt Hobson crossed over, but they couldn’t cling on as Veseyans roared back into contention in the second period.

It was, however, the first time Veseyans had dropped points this campaign.

CREWE and NANTWICH play one of their two games in hand in Midlands Two West North on Saturday.

The Cheshire side play host to Tamworth as they bid to strengthen their promotion credentials.

Crewe are in fourth, but just two points behind second-placed Moseley Oak.

And they will set their sights on pocketing a bonus-point victory against a Tamworth side who have lost 10 of their 14 league outings to date.

Crewe, though, will be looking to bounce back from last Saturday’s 29-0 defeat to Bridgnorth, which pushed the Shropshire side above them into third place.

Bridgnorth have, however, played two matches more than Crewe and Nantwich.
