Cardiff Blues boss Phil Davies insists star fullback Leigh Halfpenny has not yet informed the region he is off at the end of the season.
Reports from France on Monday said Halfpenny had agreed to join Toulon ahead of next season, where he would link up with Jonny Wilkinson and Ospreys lock Ian Evans.
But Davies claims Halfpenny is yet to reveal his hand and has not yet told the region he has signed for anyone else. Davies told Wales Online: “He hasn’t told me, chief executive Richard Holland or chairman Peter Thomas.
“I would be surprised if he has. He’s still our player – he’s not gone anywhere yet. We want to keep all our best players.”
And in a boost for the region, Sam Warburton, who is also out of contract come the end of the season, is targeting a return in mid-January. He sustained nerve damage in his shoulder in Wales’ match against Australia on November 30 but could play for the region before the start of the Six Nations.
“I’m hoping to return to playing some time in mid-January. It’s the sort of injury you’ve got to take one week at a time,” Warburton said. “I’ve been doing lots of fitness work and it’s a case of building up strength in the shoulder. It’s not an operation job because it’s nerve damage. It was just an impact on the sweet spot which has caused the nerve to become concussed.
“I’ve gone into internationals before without having played for a couple of months. But, on the other hand, with guys like Justin Tipuric and Josh Turnbull around, it’s not as if Wales are short of No 7s and need to rush me back. I can make sure it’s strong again and then try and get back in the team.”
