So it looks like Jonny Sexton will be back at Leinster after a two year sejour in France’s Top 14.
Grenoble coach and former Leinster player Bernard Jackman sees it as great news and also a boost to the IRFU, particularly given the context of the times in European times.
He told Off The Ball: “It’s a big boost to the IRFU and Irish rugby fans that the provinces and the national team can compete with the big French clubs which has been a worry obviously with the new TV deal in France.”
Jackman praised the IRFU for keeping the likes of Rob Kearney, Jamie Heaslip and Sean O’Brien in Ireland despite the enticing and lucrative opportunities on offer in France.
Jackman also highlighted the importance of being at home when the World Cup comes around for players in Ireland and Wales.
He also feels the good relationship between Sexton and Ireland coach Joe Schmidt may have helped sway the fly-half’s mind.
“I think Joe’s power of persuasion certainly would have been a factor. The opportunity coming off helping Ireland to a Six Nations win last season and the opportunity to go back and commit to Irish rugby and prepare for a World Cup with no distractions were all things that would motivate Jonny,” said Jackman, who also discussed how he is settling into the role of Grenoble head coach.
