Rugby Union: Winning starts for Wheatley, Phoenix, Wath & Thorne

Wheatley Hills won 23-16 at Old Crossleyans to get their North One East campaign off to a solid start.

A trio of Jonathan Woodcock penalties cancelled out Ramen Sembi’s early try for the hosts but two Ben Greaves penalties gave Crossleyans a 13-9 interval lead.

James Montgomery raced over on 53 minutes and Woodcock’s conversion gave Wheatley a 16-13 lead, but five minutes later Crossleyans levelled the scores with a penalty by winger Gareth Sweeney.

However, prop Sam Kerry plunged over for a try which Woodcock again converted to make the final score 23-16.

Doncaster Phoenix got off to a winning start in Yorkshire One with a 15-11 victory at home to newly-relegated Malton and Norton.

Phoenix took the lead with an early try by Ryan Peacey, converted by debutant Jamie Guy.

Malton’s goal kicker Ian Cooke landed penalties either side of the break but Guy added a penalty to make it 10-6 before Peacey’s fellow flanker James Holland, another league debutant, raced in for Doncaster’s second try.

Phoenix held on despite Malton’s Sean Emms scoring ten minutes from the end.

Wath on Dearnehad an early scare but opened their Yorkshire One programme with a 29-25 home win over Pontefract.

Wath conceded an early try and penalty goal before a try by centre Andy Hopkin reduced the deficit to 11-5 at the break.

The hosts edged in front by a single point when Joe Bartlett converted a try by Matt Burrows early in the second half, and they drove home their advantage when Simon Lines, a replacement in the second row, racked up a hat trick of tries.

Despite having a man sent off, Pontefract finished strongly with two late converted tries.

Thornensians got their Yorkshire Three campaign off to a flying start with a 54-7 home victory over Harrogate Pythons.

Thorne’s superior ball handling saw them clinch a bonus-winning eight-try victory.

Winger Brett Hunt (2), Adam Lloyd, Martin Moffatt, Aaron Holt, James Fenwick, Andy Evans and Anthony Bull all got on the trysheet.

Josh Walker converted all but one of the eight tries to put the gloss on a fine win.
