Greenwatch Rugby - Irish Exiles report – 06/07 September 2014

This is the first week of this seasons Greenwatch rugby reports, which will follow all Irish rugby players playing in top divisions outside Ireland.

John Andress, the Edinburgh prop, had a very impressive 50 minute debut for his new side. He gave his backs a solid platform in the scrums, not taking a step backwards against Munsterman John Ryan. Did give away a couple of penalties though.

Ireland legend Peter Stringer played steadily as Bath beat Sale 29-20. No darting runs or snipes from the nine but he did give George Ford perfect passing all game.

Niall Morris got a full game at fullback for Leicester Tigers, who beat Newcastle Falcons 36-17. The Dubliner made over 20 metres from three carries and six tackles, despite missing two.

London Irish had three Irishmen featuring for them as they narrowly lost to Harlequins 15-20. Eamonn Sheridan didn’t have the best game; receiving a yellow card for foul play after 25 minutes and struggled to impose himself in attack or defence. Fergus Mulchrone, the Irish qualified centre, did have an impressive game though; making 10 tackles, running over 30 metres with ball in hand and contributing with two turnovers. Scrum-half Tomas O’ Leary came off the bench just after half time and brought more attack and pace to the Irish backline.

Six conversions from Gareth Steenson helped Exeter Chiefs rout London Welsh 52-0 on their return to the Premiership. Lisburn man Ian Whitten grabbed one try while lock Ryan Caldwell made over 40 metres from eight carries.

21-year-old centre Chris Farrell came on as a sub after 50 minutes to make his debut for Grenoble. He didn’t make a huge impact bar a handful of runs and tackles, but big things are expected of him. Scrum-half James Hart is expected to return from injury next week.
