Gareth Hock weighing up shock switch to rugby union

Salford Red Devils’ transfer-listed pack ace Gareth Hock has received offers to play rugby union.

Two leading RU clubs have contacted his agent in the last 48 hours to discuss a possible shock cross-code move for the 30-year-old back rower, who was transfer listed at his own request by Salford last week.

The Red Devils claim they have not received any firm offers for Hock, but M.E.N. Sport has had confirmation of the approaches from within union circles.

Hock has never played union and is refusing to comment on his future plans, although there is also interest from Australian clubs and from within Super League, with Castleford said to be keen on offering him a short-term deal.

Salford owner Marwan Koukash has said he will be demanding a sizeable transfer fee and is adamant he will not allow Hock to leave on a loan deal.

Hock is said to be frustrated by Salford’s disappointing season and his seven-match ban for running into a referee.

He has not trained with Salford this week as he tries to sort out his next move.

Marwan Koukash is demanding at least £100,000 for Hock who is just one year into a lucrative four-year contract.

Salford plan to use the cash to target potential replacements within the NRL including Aussies David Taylor and James McManus

Incoming cash will certainly be welcomed by the Reds right now.

CEO Martin Vickers says Salford needs 7,000 fans at home games next season.

Vickers has also revealed that £250,000 has gone this season to the stadium company and the caterers.

“This a very big outlay for us,” he said. “We have, however, had a good year recruiting new sponsors and there is already a lot of interest for next season.

“This is all good and it all helps.

“We already have a new shorts sponsor lined up and our long-standing backers RSL will have a more prominent role on the front of our jersey in 2015.”
