Chris Robshaw: Backed to retain England captaincy
Harlequins director Conor O’Shea believes England should keep faith with Chris Robshaw as captain.
The burly flanker, 27, has skippered the Londoners for several seasons and was handed the same responsibility for the Red Rose in January 2012.
Now, with speculation that Northampton back row Tom Wood will replace Robshaw as England’s on-field leader, O’Shea has urged head coach Stuart Lancaster to stick with his man.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Heineken Cup Pool 4 opener against Scarlets, the former Ireland full-back said: “He’s got a lot of experience and has dealt with a lot of highs and lows. That in itself is a huge thing because you have to be very level in this game like you have to be level in every sport.
“You have to take success and not get carried and the same with defeats. He’s understood and is learning all the time in that respect and he’s under the microscope all the time.
“This will be another part of the learning experience against the Scarlets. They’ll travel in a block down the M4. It’s England vs Wales and it’s what the whole thing is about.”
Robshaw himself refused to be drawn on the issue, adding: “We’ve got a massive competition in the Heineken Cup. As soon as you start to look at things that are happening in three or four weeks time, I think you lose focus.
“With big teams like Scarlets and Clermont, when you go over there you have to be 100% focused on the job in hand. We’ll deal with that and then see what happens.”
