Joel Tomkins: Saracens star set to make England debut

Joel Tomkins looks set to make his England debut against Australia at Twickenham on Saturday.

The Saracens star will be paired with Billy Twelvetrees in the England midfield.

England coach Stuart Lancaster has released 11 players from the squad to play for their clubs in the Aviva Premiership this weekend and Henry Trinder, Luther Burrell and Kyle Eastmond – the other three centres in the squad – are amongst them.

Ben Foden looks to be included on the bench after Alex Goode was sent back to Saracens with Chris Ashton, Marland Yarde and Mike Brown likely to form the back three.

Selection headache

Danny Care has returned to Harlequins which means Lancaster will choose between Ben Youngs and Lee Dickson at scrum-half in what is probably the only position causing a selection headache now that the second-row conundrum has been solved by Geoff Parling’s injury.

“It’s never easy deciding who to select and that’s what you want – players pushing hard for places across the board,” Lancaster said.

“We have had two good days of training here at Pennyhill Park and, added to last week in Leeds, we are in good form and looking forward to the game.”

Players released: F Burns (Gloucester), L Burrell (Northampton), D Care (Harlequins), K Eastmond (Rugby), A Goode (Saracens), T Johnson (Exeter), M Kvesic (Gloucester), H Thomas (Sale), H Trinder (Gloucester), R Webber (Bath), C Wade (Wasps).

Watch England take on Australia this Saturday. Coverage starts on Sky 3D and Sky Sports 2 HD from 1:30pm.
