Head coach Stuart Lancaster kept Dave Attwood at the England base in Surrey instead of the Lions lock and can now be expected to pair Courtney Lawes and Joe Launchbury in the starting second-row against the Wallabies.
Full-back Ben Foden, like Attwood among those sent back to play for their clubs last weekend, was also retained among the 23 who will form the match squad. Foden is in at the expense of centre Henry Trinder.
Lancaster’s decision is likely to mean a first cap at centre for ex-rugby league convert Joel Tomkins.
