Argentina are making strides towards entering a club side into Super Rugby as early as 2016, according to Sports Business.

The Pumas have been the most rapidly emerging nation in world rugby in recent years, a status confirmed in 2012 when they made their long-awaited debut in the Rugby Championship. They have now switched their attentions to breaking into the southern hemisphere’s premier club competition, which currently features 15 sides from Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.

The discussions were confirmed by the national team’s communications manager Guillermo Quevedo.

“There will be a meeting with the SANZAR nations in March,” Quevedo told the Reuters news agency.

The Argentinian Rugby Union launched a new badge and team brand this week to boost the profile of the national team, which finished third at the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Former Pumas centre Fernando del Castillo is one man who worked on the rebranding and believes it’s an important moment in the growth of the national side’s identity on the national stage.

He said: “We pushed the idea that the Pumas should start to walk their own identity path in a similar way to that begun previously by world powers, particularly those in the southern hemisphere like the All Blacks, Springboks and Wallabies.”
