BT Sport reportedly planning Celtic rugby union sponsorships

BT is said to be in talks over the possibility of sponsoring more rugby union teams.

BT is reportedly looking to further raise the profile of its recently launched sports channels by negotiating sponsorship deals with the top rugby union teams in Ireland and Wales.

Similar agreements with Scottish outfits Glasgow and Edinburgh have already been struck by BT Sport, and advanced talks are now taking place with the four Irish regions and four Welsh provinces, reports the Telegraph.

The BT Sport logo is currently worn on the Scottish teams’ shirts in the Heineken Cup and the RaboDirect Pro12, the latter of which will be televised by rival broadcaster Sky for the first time next season.

Commenting on the report, a source at the telecoms giant told the newspaper: “BT is keen to have positive relationships with Welsh, Scottish and Irish regions, so it’s no surprise that we are reaching out to them.”

In a statement, the company added: “Rugby is at the heart of BT Sport and so we talk to people all the time.”

BT holds the exclusive live TV rights to rugby union’s Aviva Premiership and recently outbid Sky for Uefa Champions League and Europa League football in a three-year, £900 million deal.
