Sale’s director of rugby Steve Diamond believes Danny Cipriani will be selected for England if he maintains his current form.
Cipriani has made only seven appearances for England to date despite his obvious talent, as off-field incidents and disciplinary problems have blighted his career.
He spent time in Australia but returned to England in 2012 and is now firmly part of the Sale side that are seventh in the Aviva Premiership table.
Cipriani has been in excellent form this term but Diamond is happy for the talented back to keep doing what he is doing and let the international side of things take care of itself.
“We don’t want to start talking about him playing for England just yet. Just let him keep playing the game he’s playing,” he told BBC Radio Manchester. “If the opportunity comes in the Six Nations – brilliant. If it doesn’t, there’s a summer tour.
“If he plays like he is playing, and controls the game like he is, the England coaches will have to take a look at him some time.”
Owen Farrell of Saracens and Leicester’s Toby Flood have usually been the men that England coach Stuart Lancaster has selected at number 10 with Cipriani overlooked, but Diamond feels he is now a different person who is rightly being talked about as an England international once again.
“There’s a lot of press about Danny at the moment,” he added. “Danny’s playing well because he’s playing for the team. As he’s matured, he’s realised his individual brilliance is brilliant when combined with a team ethic.”
