Flanker Carl Fearns proud of Bath Rugby"s ferocious forwards

It has been Bath Rugby’s shiny new backs that have grabbed the headlines so far this Aviva Premiership campaign, meaning Saturday’s demolition up front of Harlequins was all the more sweeter for Carl Fearns.

New recruits Anthony Watson, George Ford and Jonathan Joseph have hit the ground running at The Rec since arriving during the summer.

Indeed it was the latter two who led their new side to a 14-3 victory over Harlequins at the weekend, Joseph with a stunning second-half try and Ford kicking three penalties to cement his place atop the Aviva Premiership points scorer charts for this season.

But Bath’s forwards showed they are not to be ignored as well as the club cemented third place in the table, with Fearns and co restricting the 2011 Aviva Premiership champions to a solitary Nick Evans penalty.

And it was this solid defence that brought the biggest smile to Fearns’ face.

“It was a great win against Harlequins and, from a forwards’ point of view, it was a great performance from us against a strong team,” he said.

“The set-piece was great and everything about our play was really pleasing. Starting at number eight, I was at the back of the scrum and the front five did such a good job it made my job so much easier.

“We have got such talents in the backs that we know that, as forwards, if we give them even average ball they have such good feet that they will be able to do something with it.

“And with George Ford playing how he is right now, we also know that he is going to kick us into the right positions for us to contribute.

“There is a really good feeling at the club at the moment with us sitting third in the Premiership and going really well.”
