Toby Faletau: Wales await news on number eight"s neck injury

Toby Faletau could be a doubt for Wales’ autumn campaign after suffering a neck injury on Friday night.

The Newport Gwent Dragons number eight was hurt tackling Ospreys wing Eli Walker in his

region’s defeat

at the Liberty Stadium.

The game was stopped for close to 10 minutes while Faletau was placed in a neck brace before being carried off.

Early indications are the treatment was precautionary but a hospital scan is expected to reveal more.

Dragons medical officer Dr Rohit Kulkarni said the extent of the injury would become clear “within a day or so”, but hopes investigations will show no major problem.

“He had some pain in his neck and with anyone with a neck injury, particularly on the rugby field, you’ve got to take extra precautions,” said Dr Kulkarni.

“Our suspicion is there’s not much happening but we’ve got to be very careful, with neck injuries in particular.

“I would suspect by the next day or so we’ll have a clearer picture as to what’s happening with Toby.”

British and Irish Lions star Faletau would be a major loss for Wales as they prepare to face South Africa on 9 November, before matches against Argentina, Tonga and Australia on successive weekends.

Ryan Jones is the only other specialist number eight in Warren Gatland’s squad, although Faletau’s regional team-mate Andrew Coombs and former Dragon Dan Lydiate – now at Racing Metro – could fill in there.

Gatland also has the option of calling up a replacement

to his squad

if it is deemed necessary.
