Rugby League: When Sam Tomkins put his shirt on the Wolves

Raw emotion will consume him as he pulls on the famous cherry-and-white jersey for the final time before joining New Zealand Warriors in a world-record three-year deal.

That Warrington provide the opposition today is apt for Tomkins and his parents Andy and Alison.

For it was there that Tomkins, the middle brother in a trio of rugby-playing siblings (Joel plays for Saracens, younger brother Logan for Wigan), spent a significant chunk of his formative years.

It began a love affair with rugby league that has seen the 24-year-old England full-back become one of the best players in the world, in either code.

Tomkins said: “My parents are from Warrington and we would visit family on a Sunday and then go to watch the Wolves at Wilderspool.

“The first rugby shirt I had was a Warrington jersey with Jonathan Davies’ name on the back.

“My dad is a police officer and was working in Chorley, so we moved there and it’s not far from Wigan. My mum and dad wanted us to play at the highest standard possible so my mum would drive us to Wigan every night.

“It got to the stage where we were travelling to Wigan every night through rush hour to get to training. It’s not easy with three lads, two parents and one car.
